Evelyne Axell (1935-1972) is a Belgian artist whose work is now internationally recognised after 30 years of neglect. She was one of Magritte’s few students. This is a woman whose life, beauty and expression were inextricably linked. She was a feminist, provocateur and a profoundly free spirit. She was the first woman in the history of art to paint herself in the nude and to depict her desireon canvas. Associated with the Pop Art movement, she quickly abandoned oil painting in favour of more contemporary materials: Plexiglas, Formica and auto enamel. She was an actress for seven years before choosing to devote herself to multi-media art. She is now recognised as one of the most innovative artists of her generation. She died in a car accident at the age of 37.
