Instead of fighting poverty, we fight the poor. Europe: its rich neighbourhoods and its suburbs of misery where “zero tolerance” is widespread. We build as many prisons as we close down factories. The poor in general and the youth born of immigration in particular are the object of all our fears. Looking behind the mirror and breaking clichés, the film shows them in their humanity, in a street, a prison, a court house or an inner city cellar, with their emotions, their desires, their fears and their despair. Far from the image of the European democracy where everyone has his chance, the film, calling France and Belgium as witnesses, offers a critical and moving viewpoint of a sometimes sordid and brutal society: our own. “What strange times we live in! What are we doing? Have we lost our minds?”
