The story takes place in a Tokyo neighbourhood in 1868, when the army has evacuated this part of the city. It is about to invade the streets to drive out the rebels, hostile to the reforms of the japanese government. In one of these deserted streets flooded by the rain a tramp appears, Shinko, who hides from the downpour in the private part of the shop. He is greeted by Kuro the house cat, who seems to know him. A young servant girl shows up, Otomi, who immediatly recognises the neighbourhood tramp. from the very start, the situation is tense between the two : she orders him to leave andhe pretends to ignore her order, making fun of her because she has taken the risk of coming back into the besieged neighbourhood to pick up her mistress'cat. The conversation gets heated. Otomi, pushed too far by the tramp's sarcasm, hits him with her umbrella. They get into a fight, tension rises and the situation unfolds while Kuro the cat watches on...
