We might be witnessing a paradigm shift today: Bernard Heuvelmans reached that point over 50 years ago, via a highly debatable method: the apeman. ‘Isn’t it extraordinary that someone who has devoted his life to asking questions about unknown creatures, in particular the yeti, Bigfoot, etc., should now find himself faced with the body of a retarded Neanderthal?’. This quotation from Alika Lindbergh illustrates the Heuvelmansian paradox underpinning the film: Heuvelmans had followed his dream to the end. Did he meet the apeman because he was looking for him, or was it the apeman who was seeking out the scientist? This ambivalence between science and marvels forms the bedrock of this project.
