Several Belgian documentaries selected at IDFA!

“Make It Look Real”, “Crushed” and “The Tunes” are part of IDFA's 2024 selection!

Since its launch in 1988 IDFA has been one of the world’s leading documentary film festivals, dedicated to the exhibition and promotion of ground-breaking creative documentaries. It has consistently served up the latest works of the world’s leading documentarians to a discerning and discriminating audience, and has dedicated itself to the task of devising innovative funding structures to ensure continuing production of top-level documentary films.

Make It Look Real by Danial Shah will have its world premiere in the Luminous section of the Dutch festival. The film is produced by Atelier Graphoui.

In Pakistan, a local photo studio becomes an informal cultural space, where personal dreams and community ties intertwine. Within the walls of the studio, visitors find more than just images. The filmmaker, a Pakistani now living abroad, portrays the photographer, becoming also his subject and collaborator. Together, they embark on a captivating exploration revealing a visual symphony in which the boundaries of race and identity dissolve..

In the IDFA Competition for Youth Documentary, we find Crushed by Camille Vigny, produced by Dérives. The film was also recently selected at DocLisboa 2024 and DOK Leipzig 2024.

Summer is the stock-car season. Cars gear up for a long day of racing that will end in their total demolition. As I reminisce offstage about the violent summer of my 18th year, recounting the man who slowly kills me inside, the cars become unrecognizable, akin to a group of smoking yet heroic carcasses.

Finally, The Tunes by Pablo Guarise has been selected in the Best of Fests section. This short documentary, produced by Dérives, was in competition at Visions du Réel 2024.

A café north of Brussels. The passing of days is punctuated by the songs sung by customers at all hours, whether for amusement, reminiscence, or passing the time. These songs gradually transform the place, turning the film into a strange musical comedy.

Let’s also highlight the presence of French-speaking Belgian co-productions: Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat by Johan Grimonprez (Onomatopée Films, Retrospective: Johan Grimonprez), The Flats by Alessandra Celesia (Thank You & Good Night, Best of Fests), and Rising Up At Night by Nelson Makengo (Twenty Nine Studio & Production, Best of Fests).

Join us in the Netherlands from November 14 to 24, 2024!
