Four French-speaking Belgian films selected for Tübingen-Stuttgart 2024!

Four French-speaking Belgian feature films are part of the 2024 program at the Tübingen and Stuttgart International Festival of Francophone Film

Since 1984, the Tübingen and Stuttgart International Francophone Film Festival (Französische Filmtage Tübingen-Stuttgart) has established itself as a major event for Francophone cinema in Germany. Each year, it presents the most recent French-language works to an ever-enthusiastic audience and also pays special attention to emerging talents.

Listen to the Voices is selected for the International Competition at the German festival. Created as part of SoundImageCulture, the film is produced by Twenty Nine Studio & Production, co-produced by Atelier Graphoui, and internationally distributed by MoreThan Films. This debut feature by Maxime Jean-Baptiste premiered at Locarno 2024, where it won two awards.

Melrick is a troubled young boy spending his summer in Guyana with his grandmother to escape his tumultuous daily life in Stains, France. At the end of his stay, he plays the drum to honor the memory of his late uncle, Lucas Diomar, who died under tragic circumstances. Despite a wave of murders of young men shaking the news, Melrick becomes aware of his place in a family shattered by an irreparable loss.

In the Horizons section, we find The Art Of Nothing by Stefan Liberski. Produced by Artémis Productions and sold internationally by The Bureau Film Sales, the film premiered at the Rome Film Fest 2024.

Jean-Yves Machond, a conceptual painter whose career soon came to a halt following a series of setbacks, decides to leave Brussels and his job as a teacher to settle in Étretat. Here, in this place that is the ultimate embodiment of Impressionism, he takes it into his head to find inspiration in order to present his major work to the world, finally earning him eternal glory and recognition. The problem is, he only has the thought of the idea of the concept... What with Bagnoule, figurative painter and bon vivant, a naive, warm-hearted individual who is to draw him out of his lethargy with his bonhomie, and the ‘charming’ Cécile de Mauprès, gallery owner and manipulator, who will disrupt his concentration, his meeting with the locals will prove decisive for the fulfillment of his plan. It’s reality when it knocks you down…

Retro Therapy by Élodie Lélu is also selected for the Horizons section at the German festival. The film is produced by Iota Production and internationally distributed by Be For Films.

Manon, a 16-years-old introverted teenager, is being forced to cohabit with her grandma, Yvonne, a former feminist activist, who doesn’t want to live alone anymore. The situation becomes trickier when Yvonne, confused, begins to think that Manon is her own daughter. Manon follows Yvonne in her delirium and starts playing the role of the mother she almost never knew. This is the chance for her to discover the true story of the women in her family and also to learn her way to become one.

Finally, The New Man by Carlos Yuri Ceuninck, produced by Néon Rouge Production, will be featured in the Focus Africa section.

QUIRINO, 76, has lived for more than 30 years in an abandoned village, at the bottom of a deep valley, between the sea and the mountains. Feeling the effects of old age, Quirino faces the dilemma of having to leave the only place he has ever known or end his days there.

Let’s also highlight the presence of the French-speaking Belgian co-productions Animale by Emma Benestan (Frakas Productions, International Competition), Queens of Drama by Alexis Langlois (Wrong Men, Horizons), and Sauvages by Claude Barras (Panique!, Horizons).

See you in Tübingen and Stuttgart from October 30 to November 6, 2024!
